Since 2012 the road has been paved and is now run by just about every car imaginable. Which brought true international acclaim. These Group B rally cars were so fast, they were outlawed in European racing. They attacked America’s mountain with Volkswagens, Audis and Peugeots. In the 1980’s, Europeans began descending on the mountain in their turbo charged rally cars designed to take on alpine and logging roads. In those very early days, racers could take their mechanic along with them so they could stop and work on the car as they traversed the mountainous route.įor most of its history, the race was predominantly run by Americans. He created the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 1916 to advertise his road. There was a carriage road heading up Pikes Peak, Penrose decided to turn it into an automobile road for the patrons of the Broadmoor to enjoy. Spencer Penrose was building the Broadmoor hotel and wanted to add an attraction. World class racers come from around the globe to attack the ribbon of asphalt to 14,000 feet above sea level that is Pikes Peak. From a standing start, drivers race the clock in solo runs to see how fast they can get up the hill. So where are these races and what are they about? Wanting to know more, I did some research about the hill climb roads and races around the US and found some pretty interesting history as well as unique features that you’ll only find in this event.
